History
Montegonzi is a delighful hamlet of houses built around a fortified castle dating back to the twelfth century which gave origin to the charming little town of Greve in Chianti.

The dominant position of the castle made it strategically important for controlling communication between Florence and Siena. In 1629 the castle was partially destroyed by the Ghibellini's guild of Siena who were fighting against the florentine Guelfi's guild.

Montegonzi is situated in quiet and panoramic location, nestling deep amidst vineyards and olive groves and offering beautifiul extensive views over the surronding landscape of Chiantishire. This hamlet has been recently and skilfully restored preserving its architectural origin features and using ancient stones and materials. During the restoration of the castle, great care has been taken, where possible, in recreating the original and all the external features have been designed to reproduce ad closely as possible the original ones, always using the original stoneworks taken from the old fortress, in order to recreate the atmosphere of the past.

The illustration shows the buildings which formed the original core of the village of Greve in Chianti. Montegonzi grew around a fortified castle dating back to the twelfth century.

Facilities
The property comprises comfortable apartments of various sizes, all of which nicely decorated in a Tuscany rustic style. At guests' disposal: beautiful garden furnished with sun-beds, sun-umbrellas and tables, swimming-pool /12 x 6 m -maximum depth 1,5 m - open from 01/04 to 31/10) situated in panoramic location, shared barbecue, private furnished outdoor area for each apartment.

Shared washing-machine in the commun laundry, hairdryer, iron and iron-board available on request. Covered free parking within the grounds.



Things to do
Greve is located between Firenze and Siena and also close to the famous places like: Certaldo, San Gimignano, Monteriggioni and many others.

Distances: the charming little village of Panzano in Chianti with all kinds of shops 5 km, Greve in Chianti 10 km (Gree in Chianti is also reachable by foot in less than 2 km), Florence 35 km, Siena 35 km.

In the sourrondings of Greve, it is possible to take beautiful walks, horse riding and cycling in a splendid countryside.
All guests can partecipate to organized mountain-bike tours, recommented shopping in the outlets, cooking or pottery lessons, wine tasting tours, guided tours in groups or individual with private driver, service to/from airports and many other activities according to the period.
We also have facilities at the nearby "Ugolino Golf Club" which is only 15 km awy from Greve.
In summer we organize dinners by the pool and wine tasting tours to the castle in front of us, Montefioralle Castle.





A recent theory, explained by Carlo Baldini in his volume “The Summaries of parchments of San Michele Arcangelo Abbey in Passignano” edited with Italo Baldini, asserts that Napoleon Buonaparte, the French Emperor, could have his origins in Chiantishire.
